VBAC at Roots Community Birth Center
Having your first baby via a C-section does not necessarily mean you need to deliver all future babies via C-section as well. In some cases, you can try having a vaginal birth after a C-section, known as a VBAC.
What is a VBAC?
A VBAC is a Vaginal Birth After Cesarean. Mothers that have had one previous C-section under certain conditions can attempt to deliver via vaginal delivery if they meet some safety standards.
Do you offer VBACs, and how do I qualify?
Yes, we offer VBACs at Roots Community Birth Center for qualifying mothers.
To have a VBAC at Roots, the minimum criteria are:
- It has been over 18-24 months since your C-section.
- Your 20-week ultrasound is compatible with having a low-risk vaginal birth (i.e. your baby isn’t breech and the placenta isn’t low lying).
- You don’t have any other indication to have a C-section.
Our VBAC clients are monitored closely for any complications. We do regular assessments at every prenatal appointment to ensure you can have a successful VBAC.
During labor, we get IV access beforehand in case you need any kind of emergency treatment. We can also help arrange a transfer to the hospital if it is needed.
What if I don’t qualify for a VBAC?
If you don’t qualify for VBAC, you may not be able to give birth at the birth center, unfortunately. However, you can still come to us for your preconception, prenatal, and postpartum care.
We’ll help you understand your choices and advocate to have the birth that you want with one of our hospital partners.
Our priority will always be your and your baby’s well-being, so we won’t do anything that puts either at risk. So if it’s safer for you to have a hospital birth, we will counsel you for it and help you prepare in whatever way we can.
If you still have questions regarding VBAC, it’s best to come in for a personalized appointment so we can assess if you qualify on a case-by-case basis.
