Well-Person Care at Roots Community Birth Center

Did you know that midwives don’t only provide care for pregnant people but can also be partners in your overall wellness care? Our Certified Nurse-Midwives provide kind and gentle care to anyone with a uterus over the age of twelve.

What is well-person care?

Well-person care is what it sounds like, it focuses on preventative healthcare and promoting overall well-being. Much like how you would see a healthcare professional for a yearly checkup or when something feels amiss, our midwives can be there to assist you.

Some of the common things we see our clients for are:

  • Annual physicals
  • Immunizations
  • Common illnesses and injuries
  • Chronic (long-term) disease management, such as management of high blood pressure, depression and diabetes
  • Reproductive health, including breast health, annual exams, prenatal and postnatal care
  • Children’s health, including newborn and well-child exams
  • Recommended screenings by age

Can you prescribe birth control?

We can provide any contraception that you’re interested in including prescriptions or Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives.

We have available whatever contraception method you’re interested in:

  • Condoms
  • Female condoms
  • Cervical caps
  • Diaphragms
  • Pills
  • Patches
  • Vaginal rings
  • Depo-Provera (injectable)
  • Nexplanon (implant)
  • IUDs

What does a typical appointment look like?

Most of the visit is talking through your health history and any concerns that you wish to address. Sometimes a physical exam is useful.

In a physical exam we:

  • Listen to your heart and lungs
  • Palpate for any inflamed lymph nodes
  • Check your thyroid
  • Do a gentle abdominal exam

We do recommend annual breast exams after the age of 26. Sometimes a pelvic assessment can be useful. We also may do a PAP smear.

Our space was created to make you feel comfortable, welcomed, at ease, and make health care at all phases of life for all ages feel the same. If you are ready to start your well-person care with us, send us a message!
