Chestfeeding & Breastfeeding: How Midwives Support Your Feeding Journey

Feeding your baby is one of the first ways you care for them. But it doesn’t always feel simple. Whether you plan to chestfeed, breastfeed, pump, or use formula, you need support. At Roots Community Birth Center, feeding support begins during pregnancy and continues through the postpartum period. Let’s dive in a little deeper!

Support Begins Before Birth

During prenatal visits, midwives talk with you about your goals. These one-on-one conversations prepare you for feeding. They help you understand what to expect and how to detect problems early.

Support also includes guidance on skin-to-skin contact and responsive feeding. These early moments build connection and support your baby’s feeding cues.

Help in the First Hours

Right after birth, Roots midwives offer hands-on help with latch, positioning, and your baby’s first feeds. During the 24-hour visit, midwives check if the latch feels right and if feeding feels comfortable. All this is done without rushing or pressure.

All midwives at Roots are trained in chestfeeding and breastfeeding support. You can meet them in person or talk through a virtual visit. Lactation consultants and certified lactation counselors are also available by referral when needed.

When Feeding Is Hard

Feeding may not go the way you planned. That is common. Roots offers a place where you can talk about your struggles without judgment. Whether you feel sore, worry about supply, or feel discouraged, you will be met with patience and care.

Roots Community Birth Center encourages feeding with love. It may mean nursing, pumped milk, formula, or a mix. The goal is to support what works best for you and your baby.

Support for Every Parent

Finally, feeding support at Roots is for all families. Trans and non-binary parents are welcome. Midwives use language that matches their preferences and identity. You do not need to explain or defend your choices. You will be treated with respect and care. If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call!
