Nourishing Your New Beginning: Postpartum Care at Roots Community Birth Center
Bringing a baby into the world is just the beginning of your journey into parenthood. After the excitement of labor and delivery fades, a new phase starts. This time is for healing, bonding, and learning to care for your newborn. It’s also important to take care of yourself. At Roots Community Birth Center, we think the postpartum period matters as much as pregnancy and birth. We’ve created a model that offers you space, time, and support. This helps you navigate the transition with confidence and care.
Roots’ Unique Postpartum Model
Healing takes time. Getting used to new routines, feeding schedules, and your baby’s cues takes time. We provide six postpartum visits. We understand this time brings many changes. Our model ensures that both you and your baby are thriving during the early weeks.
Here’s what to expect:
- A home visit within 24 to 36 hours of birth
- A second home visit around day 3
- A follow-up visit on day 7 (at home or in the clinic, depending on what works for you)
- In-office visits at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 6 weeks postpartum
Each visit is about more than just checking boxes. It’s an opportunity to pause and connect. We ask how you’re doing. We listen to your concerns. We help you feel grounded during this life-changing time.
What happens in postpartum visits?
Each appointment varies based on your healing stage.
In the first few visits, we focus on:
- Monitoring your baby’s feeding and weight gain
- Completing newborn screenings and checking vital signs
- Supporting breastfeeding or bottle-feeding
- Ensuring your emotional and physical health are on track
- Answering questions about recovery, baby care, and sleep
These visits happen in the comfort of your home or in our clinic, based on your preference. This flexibility lets you relax and connect with your baby. You won’t feel rushed or overwhelmed.
As you move into the later weeks, the focus expands. We begin to talk about:
- Contraception and future family planning
- Emotional well-being, including mood shifts and mental health
- Physical healing and how your body is recovering from birth
- Transitioning your baby into pediatric care after six weeks
This easy, step-by-step method lets you ask questions and get personal help.
What If I Need More Support?
Everyone’s recovery journey is different. Some parents feel ready and confident right away. Others need extra time and additional resources, and both are completely normal.
If you need help healing, especially after perineal tears or with pain, we can link you to trusted pelvic floor physical therapists who specialize in postpartum care.
If you’re dealing with emotional issues, like the baby blues or something more serious, we have many resources to help you. These include therapists, community support groups, and holistic practitioners. They possess skills in helping with postpartum mood disorders.
No matter what you’re facing, we are here to help you get the support you deserve.
What About My Baby?
Your baby remains under our care for the first six weeks. We watch their growth, do screenings, and offer feeding support. After that, care transitions to a pediatric provider of your choice.
We make this shift as smooth as possible by providing a carefully curated list of pediatricians we trust. We encourage families to choose someone who shares their values and parenting approach. Our goal is to support you in building a long-term care relationship that feels right for you and your baby.
A Continuum of Care You Can Trust
At Roots, postpartum care is not a brief check-in. It’s the same caring support we offer during pregnancy and birth. We see postpartum not as a finish line, but as a beginning. It is a time that deserves care, attention, and space to unfold at your pace.
